1. Let Love Take It From Here Play
Let Love Take It From Here
mom looked up to see her baby girl tears, she said mom I think it’s over. do you mind if I stay here, all we do is fight. we can’t see eye to eye, momma said girl, there’s more to this than just one try

whenever I fell down, whenever I had my doubts, I’d take a step back and try to see what the fuss is all about. you’re too close dear, to see he’s still right there, runnin’ won’t fix your problems, I swear. let love take it from here

he set another up before he put the first one down, bartender said what’s up boy, don’t you think you should slow down. he said it might be over, bartender smiled and said son a marriage, it ain’t easy, you need to clear your head

whenever I fell down, whenever I had my doubts, I’d take a step and try to see what the mess is all about. you’re too close friend to see this ain’t the end. son, go back home she’ll be waiting for you I swear. let love take it from here

he pulled into the driveway she came runnin’ out him, he said I’m sorry for my part of the way things’ve been. she said you can’t take all the blame, I was there too, but I need to know, what we’re gonna do? it’s what I want, what about you?

then he said baby I fell down, and you had your doubts, let’s take a step back and see if we can’t work this whole thing out. I’m still in love with you and if you’re willing to give it one more chance I’ll make it up to you, I swear. She said I need to know just how much you care, To let love take it from here

Let Love Take It From Here
Notes
I was having coffee with a friend who was in the throws of divorce. He was only officially separated and still dealing mentally with the trauma of it all and not getting a lot of support to try and work things out. In my mind, I wished that he could patch things up and try again. I always wish that love wins.

2. Lead Footin’ In The Left Lane Play
Lead Footin’ In The Left Lane
sick of having fridays turn into mondays, with out one dollar to spare, countin‘ out pennies to pay my bills, this rat race don’t seem so fair

what happened to times when life was easy? how’d it get to be this way? I’m about to my breakin’ point, time to stand or fade away

I wanna go lead footin’ in the left lane. can’t go fast enough. leave my worries a few miles back, gonna gun it and I won’t let up. this comin’ in last is one big drag, my patience is worn thin. I wanna go lead footin’ in the lead lane. time to go from losin’ to win

the number 80 punched on a clock, looks better as an mph, windows down with the radio pumpin’, jockeyin’ for first place

don’t wanna be a law breaker, but I’ve got this itch I need to fill, I wanna fly pass those other cars, just like they’re standin’ still

chorus

oh officer could you give me one lil break? was I really going all that fast? didn’t seem like 98 …

chorus

Notes
Until I became a performer, I had never even been pulled over, let alone received a speeding ticket. I think I was just plain lucky though, because I’ve always had a tendency to like to hit the gas peddle and go! It’s exhilarating and feels good when life’s worries are keeping you down.

3. You Can Fly Play
You Can Fly
I was down on 5th and broadway, thinkin’ bout what lies ahead, wrestled all those “what if” demons, late at night in my own bed. music was the life for me, I knew where I wanted to go, my fear stood in the middle of the road

so I turned to my friend Jill, who’d been to this place before. she just looked at me and said “honey, for you there’s so much more”. have faith in yourself and God, let him do the rest, and just keep giving everything your best

how will you walk on water, til you jump out of the boat. how will you know you can swim, until you go under and choke. how will you know you can love, until you feel your heart break. It’s ok once in a while for you to cry, and walk when you need to, but don’t forget that you can fly

I just laughed and said damn Jill, how’d get so smart? she said oh I took the hard road, I could tell you bout my scars. but I see that look that I once had, deep down in your eyes. girl, you won’t know if you can make it, til you try

she said time takes care of things, all by itself. you can find the answers in yourself, when you’ve got nobody else. you can crawl if you need to
Lyrics
You Can Fly
Notes
This song is about friendship and remembering your self worth. Sometimes we forget what we’re capable of, and Jill reminded me of what my parents tell me all the time...that I could do whatever I put my mind to. The real question was how bad did I want it? When I was struggling with the decision to go solo, I emailed a few of my peers and asked for their thoughts on the subject. Several wonderful women emailed me back very quickly and said go for it (Jill Jack, Barbara Payton, and Liz Larin). Jill Jack simply wrote back one line that said “How will you walk on water, unless you jump out of the boat?” After I cried, I started writing this song, about all the good times and great conversations Jill and I had had over the years. She’s been an inspiration to me.

4. Maybe I Won’t Play
Maybe I Won’t
well I see you gawkin’ out of the corner of my eye, tryin’ to be cool when you’re oh so shy, baby we ain’t babies so let’s get on with this

I’m thinkin’ you’re thinkin’ I might be cool, you’re thinkin’ I’m thinkin’ you might be a fool, tick tick tickin’ my clock it’s goin’ like this

maybe I’ll laugh at you, or make a face, or politely decline then run outta this place. you ain’t never gonna find out until you ask, I might say no, oh but then again, maybe I won’t

two weeks later you’re at my door, checkin’ me out to the ceilin’, down to the floor, you say “honey you look nice dressed like this”

I’m thinkin’ you’re thinkin’ this is uptight, I’m thinkin’ that maybe you might be right, talk talk talkin’ my nerves are goin’ like this

maybe I’ll laugh at you, or make a face, cause most of your jokes are in bad taste. you ain’t never gonna find out if I’m having a good time, I might say no, oh but then again, maybe I won’t

the evening flew and it’s almost done, will we end up as lovers just havin’ fun? you say “honey I ain’t had a night much better than this”

I’m thinkin’ youre thinkin’ you wanna come in, I’m thinkin’ I ain’t ready to cross that bridge, small small small talkin’s comin’ to an end

so I smile at you, you wanna ask for a kiss, will I politely decline, will it end like this? you ain’t never gonna find out until you ask, I might say no, oh but then again, oh yeah then again, maybe I won’t , maybe I won’t, mabye I will? but I’m thinkin’ I won’t

5. Drink You Away Play
Drink You Away
well I’ve swung this door open many times before, the smell of stale cigarettes and spilled beer on the floor, somehow give me comfort to get through this day as I sit here and try to drink you away

the bartender here knows just what to put in my glass, the cheap stuff up there helps me wipe away the past, all those sweet words I’m chokin’ down that you used to say as I sit here and try to drink you away

lord they’re goin’ down faster as the night lingers on , ‘til I’ve just about drank all your memories gone, except for the one where I tried to beg you to stay, that’s why I’m sittin’ here tryin to drink you away, as I sit here and drink you away

you used to call me your angel sent from heaven above, now I know it’s another that you’re thinkin’ of. should I save her this seat for the games that you play? cause she’ll sit here and try to drink you away

they’ll be goin’ down faster as the night lingers on, til she just about drinks all your memories gone, she’ll be chokin’ on the sweet words you used to say when she sits here and trys to drink you away hey, when she sits here and drinks you away

time wounds all heals that’s what I’ve always been told, and your turn’s comin’ cause your heart is stone cold. ask for the cheap stuff up there to wash her memories away, when you sit there and try to drink her away

are they goin’ down faster as the night lingers on? have you just about drank all her memories gone? are you chokin’on the sweet words she used to say? when you sit there and try to drink her away ...

Notes
I wrote this song about a bar in Hamtramck that was called Horan’s at the time. I couldn’t get over the feeling that the place looked like it should have been in the woods in upper Michigan, and a perfect hideout for someone to kill some time and pain if they needed to. The song seemed to write itself on the way home.

6. Memphis Play
Memphis
baby sit down here beside me, couple things I gotta say, I spent way too many lonely nights, when you were out of town workin’ away. bossman called lookin’ for you tonight, and said there was no Tennessee, there’s no need for you tell me what don’t I already see

bet that’s a call comin’ in from Memphis, from someone you know, who must know what it feels like, when you decide not to show. bet she’s sittin’ there waitin in the dark, with a drink in her hand. well let Memphis keep on ringin’, don’t she know you’re my man

all those years we spent together, only meant something to me, cause I had my chance at temptation, and it was no choice I could see. oh I guess there was only one of us who thought that this felt right, so I packed your bags for Tennessee, you can still be there tonight

chorus

oh I want to know, how could you do me like this? and what was so great about her that you couldn’t resist?

7. I Don’t Need Your Bad Play
I Don’t Need Your Bad
candle lights have all burned down, like the torch I was holdin’ out, waitin’ for you to crawl back home

don’t baby baby baby me, cause right now black is all I see, your well of chances has run dry, I’ll take you back, right when pigs fly

woah, that’s it, I’m gone, It’s been real but not real fun. this ain’t love and I don’t have to take it. woah ooh shame on you for all those things you put me through. you weren’t even the best I ever had. boy I don’t need your bad. boy I don’t need your bad.

tall dark and leather coat, the way that you lit up your smoke, pulled me in and wouldn’t let me go

those baby baby baby blue eyes, left me in the rain to cry, you had me right where you wanted. nothing more than hanging by a thread

chorus

go and take your bad luck some where else. keep it up, you’ll end up by yourself

chorus
Lyrics
I Don’t Need Your Bad
Notes
I wrote this song on the 5th of July after having a bonfire at my house the night before. I had a bunch of people over and there were some women sitting by the fire talking about their relationship troubles. “Why do we always go for the bad boys?” one said. Last time I was in Nashville, I was told that Nashville didn’t need anymore “men bashing” songs. There were too many. I thought to myself that there always needs to be new song food to kill pain, and this one might make someone feel better.

8. That Ain’t Happened Yet Play
That Ain’t Happened Yet
it looks like there’s a told you so perched upon your lips, but don’t you be making plans to get your hands back on my hips. just because I haven’t got right where I’m going to, don’t mean I’ll turn and drag my tail and come runnin’ back to you

you tell me that I’m better off in the comfort of your arms, lookin’ in those big ‘ol eyes and gettin’ woo’ed by your charms, and you’re waiting for that call that says I have some regrets it’ll be a cold one in hell, cause that ain’t happened yet

you shoulda done me better if you wanted me to stay, cause there ain’t a woman alive who’d put up with things that way. I’m so far gone can’t see you in my rearview no more, chalk up one for you honey, but I ain’t keeping score

chorus

oh I miss the way you smile at me, like a hound dog misses getting fleas.

chorus. oh like a snocone in hell. that ain’t happened yet

9. What Have We Become Play
What Have We Become
I’ve been waiting on your call, been watching down my street, but you don’t come around at all. can you tell me, what have we become?

those flowers standing there, don’t make up for the loneliness I find sitting in this chair. can you tell me, what have we become?

don’t wanna know this feelin’, running through my head, when I’m lying here thinkin’, alone in this bed. is this the beginning of the end, cause we’re no longer lovers? you were my friend and now you can’t be one. so can you tell me, can you tell me, what have we become?

how do diamonds get to glow, when they’re lying in a box, with no place to go? can you tell me, what have we become?

what would be the difference, if we went our separate ways? would the sun come back to shine on me and brighten up my days? is this the beginning of the end, cause were no longer lovers? you were my friend and now you can’t be one. so can you tell me, yeah, what have we become?
Lyrics
What Have We Become
Notes
I was in a relationship where communication had broken down and everything just felt suspended in air. Would we break up? Would we patch this up? We were still going through some of the motions, yet the atmosphere was pea soup thick. Either way I wanted the feelings I had at that time to end, because not knowing has it’s own kind of pain. In a good relationship that is breaking up, you not only lose your lover, but you lose your friend as well.

See Ya Later
she said I’ll pack you in this box cause you’re going with me, cause I don’t think I can do this on my own. when the miles from this distance start to hit me, I want my best girlfriend to be close

Justin’s gonna start his job on monday, I’m enrolled in the college in the spring, I know we’ll be all busy gettin settled in, when I get hooked up online Ill give you a ring

cause this ain’t good bye, it’s just see ya later. don’t you cry or I will too. I’ll be right there on the other side of this computer, if ya need me, or wanna see me, for now it’ll have to do.

I said girl I don’t think you give yourself credit, for just how strong of a woman you’ve become, when old homesick tries to set in don’tcha let it, think of all the fun and trouble that we’ve done

you’ve always wanted to call your home Tennessee, and it looks like you’re gonna get your wish. I know it’ll be so hard to leave old Michigan, I’d expect you’d have second thoughts like this

chorus

there’s no way were gonna stop our silly talkin’, the only think that stays the same is change that’s true, cause friends like us, we go on forever, if you need anything I’m here for you.

Notes
25% of the population of Detroit has left the building. This means that almost anyone that lives here has had friends or family move for a job. My friend was struggling with her decision to leave the state and start a new life. We were chatting on Facebook, and she asked me to write her a song as a going away present. So I copied our conversation down and made it into a song. That night she came to my concert at the Trinity House Theater and I performed it for her as a going away gift. It really goes out to all people keeping in contact via the internet. Thank goodness for it!

Notes
This was one of my favorite songs in the 80’s. Bryan Adams is a brilliant songwriter and I loved the way he would address controversial situations with his songs. My producer, Nolan Mendenhall, suggested this arrangement and it came together in a cool bluesy way.

Julianne Ankley's much awaited 2nd CD ... here's how she describes it: "The overall tone is related to the title...Vivid. The songs all come from vivid colorful feminine emotions. I felt free to write in any emotional direction I chose to on this CD and I wanted it to reflect the complexity of a grown woman and all feelings one has possibly accumulated in her life. The cover is actually a painting that I did and sold in 2003. I think it was the beginning of a time of growth for me and I was ready to let all my colors show in my paintings. This is how I feel about this CD now; like I'm letting vivid emotional colors shine through."
